EPOCH Magazine

Publication

The VisCom II (Publication Design) Class, we were to create our own magazine. Including the Name, masthead, cover, contents page, and spreads.

For my magazine I chose EPOCH. Epoch means a period of time in history, and that is what my publication is. It tell history that occurred in the current month.

My purpose for this magazine was to deliver accurate historical events to people who want to learn. The target audience would be College students, graduates, high school students, or just the average history buff.

I wanted to present history in an interesting but also familiar way. I chose the two column set up as a nod back to history books, but kept it modern and fun with the use of QR bar codes that would allow the reader to scan it with their phone, and watch videos that correspond to the article.

The give away I chose to do a small pocket or desk calendar. It has highlights on one side, that has the corresponding historical event on the reverse side.

I really enjoyed doing this project, mostly because I love history, and it was something I have never tried.

The hardest struggle with this one was the opening spread for the Apollo 11 issue. I didn't want to use a stock photo that had been used a million times prior, nor did I want to use something generic that didn't fit. After trying typographic treatments and other images, I decided to illustrate a likeness of the rockets side, with an ID plate with the title and other information on it.
